(Senior) Machine Learning Engineer

The Opportunity

Do you crave impact in your work? Do you want to use your skills to improve the lives of patients? At Vexev, we’ve created technology to do just this, and we’re proudly growing our team. As Vexev’s ML Engineer you will be creating and developing the automated medical image processing tools for the Vexev Ultrasound Imaging System. Vexev’s System will become the new standard for vascular imaging and be used globally day-in-day-out, to eradicate cardiovascular diseases of all types.

At Vexev, we prioritise innovative design, efficacy and reliability in bringing the Vexev Ultrasound Imaging System to market. Leveraging your experience with machine learning and image processing, you will be responsible for performing all aspects of the development of imaging solutions from prototype to the final product. This will include the full development process from design to implementation and testing, ahead of our clinical trials and market launch. You will be empowered to make thoughtful and pragmatic choices, while working in an intentionally highly ambiguous and fast-paced environment.

As part of this role, you will have the opportunity to grow, connect and collaborate with a passionate multidisciplinary team who are all motivated to revolutionise the discipline of vascular imaging. The successful development and rollout of Vexev’s Ultrasound Imaging System will facilitate a shift in the approach to vascular imaging from reactive to proactive, saving millions of lives across the world as a result.

Working at Vexev

At Vexev we value people, kindness, creativity and collaboration above all else. We’re a small company of down-to-earth people, who like each other's company. There is no dress code, no meetings that don’t make sense, email is rarely used internally and you set your own start and finish time. We believe in working flexibly to suit your preferences, life stage, and family. Product ambitions never come at the expense of a teammates' well-being.

We are a team of light-hearted individuals who are very serious about creating paradigm shifting solutions for vascular imaging, and as such have created a work environment where team members have autonomy, flexibility and minimal cognitive overhead with busy work that may take their minds off this mission.

As Vexev continues to grow and innovate, we encourage you to do the same, by providing ongoing opportunities to grow into leadership roles and make a real difference in people’s lives.

Our expansive HQ is located in Surry Hills - a 5 minute walk from Central station, and close-by to many great cafe’s, sandwich shops, fashion outlets and bars. Working at Vexev, you will find yourself in an office with natural sunlight, plants and fresh air throughout - as well as end of trip facilities (showers, bicycle storage, lockers etc.) and a huge rooftop for team lunches and gatherings.

Vexev is well funded and backed by leading Australian and US venture capital firms, meaning you will experience what it is like to be in the early stage of a company with exponential potential, closely collaborating with the top minds our industry has to offer. As an early employee, equity will be offered on top of a competitive market-based salary.

The Role

Responsibilities

  • Designing and building data pipelines to collect, store and process medical imaging data. No medical imaging experience necessary, but you’ll be exposed to the cool robotic device that generates it!

  • Developing and deploying machine learning models to classify and segment medical imaging data, that will be used to support vascular surgeons and improve treatment for dialysis patients, among others.

  • Working closely with engineers and scientists to integrate your machine learning models for production in a medical device. You’ll get to overhear chats about mechanical, electronics, robotics algorithms and more.

  • Validating and testing your models to ensure that they are safe and effective for clinical use. This is a real device with clinical trials on the way!

  • Documenting the complete development process and communicating the results to an audience of stakeholders from different backgrounds, such as engineers, regulatory team, and clinicians.

Must-Have Requirements

  • Show you can solve complex problems in fields relevant to this role such as, image processing, classification algorithms, data pipelines, signal processing, machine learning or robotics.

  • Creative ideas and the ability to prototype small-scale solutions to experiment.

  • Fluency programming in relevant languages such as Python, C and/or C++.

  • Understanding of relevant libraries (ITK/VTK, OpenCV, ROS2, PyTorch/Tensorflow, CUDA, Numpy/Scipy) and build tools (CMake, Git).

  • Strengths in understanding and integrating existing code and algorithms.

  • Capability and/or enthusiasm to work with developers that use standard software development principles (Git + code review workflow).

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, organisational and prioritisation skills and high attention to detail.

  • Ability to work both cooperatively and unsupervised, while integrating the needs of a cross functional team.

Nice-To-Have Requirements

  • Experience working with agile development methodologies and project management software (for example, Bitbucket or JIRA).

  • Understanding of ultrasound physics, 3D graphics and/or medical imaging/health data protocols such as DICOM/HL7.

  • Working under a QMS and familiarity with medical device standards (ISO:13485).

  • Exposure to working in an early stage startup, ideally in the DeepTech or MedTech domain.

Cultural-Fit Requirements

  • Puts people first, is passionate about achieving results collaboratively as a team.

  • Thrives in uncertainty - comfortable upskilling and working from first principles.

  • Fired up about Vexev’s mission! Wants to be a core part of our long term journey to create a world where cardiovascular disease is no longer the leading cause of death.
